The teacher is a noble profession and that is what I want to be, simply because that is my dream. But how can I be a teacher? My father is a carpenter and my mother is just a housewife. Sometimes my father's work was 3 times a week with a daily rate of 100 pesos (the Year 1990). Total earnings of 300 pesos a week. We ate only vegetables that we harvested in our backyard, "tuyo" (dried fish) or "bagoong" paired with saging or kamote.
I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers. We are both studying, except for my two older sisters because of financial problems. They graduated only in high school. We are living in a very far-flung non-civilized place. Don't have electricity and no water supply. We are just using "gasera" (kerosene lamp) during night time and we fetch water from the deep well to wash dishes, take a bath and for us to drink. In short, we have a very simple life but we are happy together.
Every day, we walked 9 kilometers to school because we didn't have money for habal-habal (means of transportation in our place). But, I kept going to school 5 days a week because I wanted to have a high grade. I always study my lessons until 4th-year high school.
Right after graduation in high school, I thought it was the end of everything. But still, I kept on praying that a miracle came. I ask my parents if I want to take a scholarship but my mother disagrees. She was afraid because the University was very far from our place. We need to walk for 2 hours, then travel for 1 hour via habal-habal, then ride again in a jeep or bus for 4 hours and a 10-minute ride in a tricycle. Aside from that, my mother told me that she doesn't have any money for fare and food allowance to go to University. But of course, I'm still hoping and thinking of any possibility.
One of my classmates who knows my story lent me money. She told me that I would stay at her uncle's house near the university. Immediately, I informed my parents but still, they don't allow me to go. I ask God why this happening to me. How could I achieve my dream of becoming a teacher for me to teach my kababayan who could not afford to go to school?
A day before the exam, I escaped from our home and went with my classmate. I left only a letter to my parents that they don't have anything to worry about me. I will try to manage myself. Luckily, I passed the entrance exam as well as the scholarship.
I applied also to fast food as a service crew which is 15 kilometers away from the university for my daily needs and some other projects in School. I was happy because Jollibee Foods Corporation has a program that will help working students. They arranged our duty schedule based on our class schedule.
To cut the story short, I graduated with course Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education majoring in Mathematics at Jose Rizal Memorial State University, Dapitan City. I went to Manila for Board Exam purposes right after graduation.
I'm still working in the Jollibee Foods Corporation Savers Mall Pasay branch to finance all my expenses and personal needs before the exam. Luckily, I passed the Licensure Examination for Teacher. I immediately resigned from JFC and went back to my province because I wanted to serve in my hometown. I applied as a Public School Teacher but as per the division superintendent at that time, there is no vacant item. So, still, I'm happy to volunteer myself because I know that only a few teachers in our hometown. I want to teach because that is my dream.
